Copyright, Licensing and Author Rights Policy

Avicenna Journal of Medical Sciences (AJMS) supports open access to scholarly research while protecting the rights of authors and ensuring appropriate attribution and responsible reuse of published work.

Copyright

Authors retain copyright in articles published by AJMS.

By submitting a manuscript and, following acceptance, agreeing to publication, authors grant AJMS the right of first publication and the non-exclusive right to publish, distribute, archive, reproduce, and make the article available in electronic and other formats as part of the scholarly record.

Authors remain responsible for ensuring that their submitted work does not infringe the copyright or other intellectual property rights of third parties.

Open-Access License

Unless otherwise stated, articles published in AJMS are distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0).

Under this license, users may read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, link to, adapt, and build upon the published work for lawful purposes, including commercial use, provided that appropriate credit is given to the original author(s) and source, a link to the applicable license is provided, and any changes made are clearly indicated.

Author Rights

Authors retain the right to:

• retain copyright in their published work;
• use their article for teaching, education, presentations, and academic activities;
• include the article in theses or dissertations, subject to appropriate citation;
• deposit or share permitted versions of the manuscript in institutional or disciplinary repositories;
• share the published article through personal or institutional academic profiles;
• reuse portions of the article in future scholarly works, with appropriate citation to the original publication; and
• comply with legitimate institutional or funding requirements concerning open access and repository deposit.

Right of First Publication

Authors grant AJMS the right to publish the accepted article as the version of record.

The final published version should be cited as the authoritative version when the work is subsequently reproduced, deposited, discussed, or reused.

Third-Party Material

Authors are responsible for obtaining appropriate permission to reproduce copyrighted material that is not covered by an applicable license or lawful exception.

This may include:

• figures;
• photographs;
• illustrations;
• tables;
• questionnaires;
• scales or instruments;
• substantial extracts of previously published text; and
• other copyrighted material.

Evidence of permission should be provided to AJMS when requested.

Authors must appropriately acknowledge the original source of all third-party material.

Previously Published Material

Material previously published elsewhere should not be reproduced without appropriate permission, attribution, and disclosure.

Permission to reproduce copyrighted material does not remove the requirement to cite the original source.

Author-Generated Figures, Tables and Supplementary Material

Original figures, tables, graphical materials, and supplementary content created by the authors and published as part of an AJMS article are normally covered by the same open-access license as the article unless otherwise indicated.

Third-party content included within an article may be subject to separate copyright or licensing restrictions.

Repository Deposit and Self-Archiving

AJMS supports responsible self-archiving and repository deposit.

Authors may deposit permitted versions of their manuscripts in institutional, subject-specific, or other appropriate scholarly repositories in accordance with the journal’s Self-Archiving Policy.

Where the final published version is deposited or shared, the complete citation and persistent link or DOI to the version of record should be provided.

Attribution

Reuse of AJMS content must provide appropriate attribution to the original author(s), article title, journal, and other relevant publication details.

The original DOI should be included where available.

Reuse must not imply endorsement by AJMS or the authors where no such endorsement exists.

Integrity of the Scholarly Record

Reuse, adaptation, translation, or redistribution of published content must not misrepresent the original findings or create a misleading impression regarding the authors’ conclusions.

Where material has been modified, adapted, or translated, this should be clearly indicated.

Corrections, retractions, expressions of concern, or other post-publication notices associated with the original article should remain appropriately linked to the scholarly record.

Commercial and Promotional Use

Where content is published under CC BY 4.0, lawful commercial reuse is permitted subject to the terms of the license, including proper attribution and disclosure of modifications.

The AJMS name, journal logo, branding, or other proprietary marks may not be used in a manner that implies sponsorship, endorsement, or affiliation without appropriate authorization.

Author Responsibility

Authors are responsible for:

• ensuring that they have the authority to submit and publish the work;
• obtaining necessary copyright permissions;
• accurately identifying third-party content;
• complying with applicable funder or institutional requirements; and
• ensuring that copyright agreements do not conflict with rights previously granted to another party.

Licensing Information on Published Articles

AJMS aims to display applicable copyright and licensing information clearly on published articles and their online records.

Where a different license or copyright arrangement applies to particular content, this will be stated explicitly.

Policy Review

AJMS periodically reviews its copyright, licensing, and author-rights policies to reflect developments in open access, scholarly communication, intellectual property, and responsible publishing.
